I love sharing information and helping people make travel choices that fit their travel style.
You've booked your dream cruise. Now comes the fun part—selecting the cabin that will be your home away from home. With so many options available, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. But here's the truth: the right cabin choice isn't only about budget. It's about understanding what you need to relax, sleep well, and enjoy your voyage to the fullest.
Let me walk you through the options so you can choose with confidence.
Cabin Types: What Works Best for You?
Interior Cabins are the most budget-friendly choice, and honestly? They're underrated. No windows means a dark, peaceful sleeping environment—perfect if you're a light-sensitive sleeper. Some modern ships now offer virtual balconies with high-definition virtual ocean views, giving you that open-air feel without the premium price tag.
Ocean View Cabins feature a window or porthole. You get natural light and a glimpse of the sea, with the flexibility to close the shades if you want to sleep in. They're ideal if you want a connection to the ocean without committing to a balcony.
Balcony Cabins are the sweet spot for many travelers. There's something irreplaceable about starting your morning with coffee and fresh fruit on your private balcony, watching the world drift by. If privacy and relaxation are priorities, this upgrade often pays for itself in peace of mind.
Suites are your luxury option. They usually offer more space with premium amenities - and often bundled with perks like priority boarding or exclusive dining. Perfect for milestone celebrations or when you want to truly indulge.
Location Matters More Than You'd Think
Where your cabin sits on the ship can be just as important as the cabin type itself.
Midship cabins are often preferred for their stability as they experience the least motion from the ocean—a practical choice for families or anyone prone to seasickness. They're also usually conveniently located closest to elevators and main amenities
Forward and aft cabins offer unique character. Personally, I sleep my best in forward or aft locations on higher decks. There's something about being gently rocked by the ocean that helps me fall asleep instantly and sleep more deeply. Aft cabins often come with larger balconies, while forward cabins tend to be quieter. The very front forward cabins typically offer a metal balcony, as opposed to glass or transparent railings. So if you want to lounge in a chair watching the ocean go by, a cabin at the very front of a ship might not be your best choice.
Deck level can affect both your view and your peace. Higher decks may mean better views but potentially more noise from pools and restaurants. Of course, that depends on the ship's layout, which varies by vessel. You may also feel more ocean movement the higher up your deck is. Lower decks are typically quieter and more stable.
Pro tip: Ask your travel advisor to review the deck plan with you. Check what's on the decks above, below, and around your cabin. Avoid locations near nightclubs, theaters, and high-traffic areas—and steer clear of cabins with obstructed views from lifeboats unless you're prioritizing savings over scenery.
What is a Guaranteed Cabin?
A guaranteed cabin is a cruise booking option where you purchase a specific cabin category (Balcony, Ocean View, Interior, etc.) at a discounted rate, but the cruise line assigns the exact cabin number and location. In other words, you know what type of cabin you're getting—complete with all its amenities—but not the specific stateroom number or precise deck placement.
You will know your cabin type - but you won’t know your exact cabin number or location until closer to the sailing date.
The cabin will absolutely be in the category booked—no downgrades, but you do not get to choose the location.
Some cruise lines allow clients to upgrade to a specific cabin selection for an additional fee if they change their minds
Guaranteed cabins are a good choice for:
Flexible guests who don't have strong preferences about cabin location
Repeat cruisers who know they'll be happy with any placed cabin in their chosen category
Who Are You Traveling With?
Your cabin choice may also depend on who you are traveling with.
Families: Look for family-friendly cabins with connecting rooms or additional sleeping areas, such as bunk beds or pull-out sofas. Some ships even offer multi-room suites with extra bathrooms, which can be invaluable for larger families.
Couples: A balcony cabin or suite can provide a romantic setting with private outdoor space and luxurious amenities.
Solo Travelers: Some ships offer single-occupancy cabins, which are smaller and more affordable than standard options.
Budget Wisely
Here's my philosophy: balance your priorities with your budget. If you'll spend most of your time exploring the ship and ports, an interior or ocean view cabin is perfectly lovely. But if you value downtime, privacy, and those quiet mornings with a view, a balcony cabin or suite might be the best investment you make on your cruise.
Special Considerations
If accessibility is important for you or your travel party, look for wheelchair-accessible cabins with wider doorways and roll-in showers. Similarly, if you're traveling with young children or have mobility concerns, a cabin near elevators makes life significantly easier.

Packing light for a two-week vacation may seem impossible, but with the right strategy, you can travel with just a carry-on. Here's how:
With these tips, you'll breeze through airports and have everything you need for a fantastic vacation.
Cruising is one of the most exciting ways to travel. You get the chance to visit multiple destinations, enjoy world-class dining, and experience entertainment and relaxation—all without constantly packing and unpacking. If you've been thinking about taking a cruise, you're not alone—millions of travelers discover every year that a cruise vacation hits that sweet spot between adventure, relaxation, and convenience.
But here's the thing: not all cruises are created equal, and choosing the right cruise line can mean the difference between a trip you tolerate and one you'll reminisce about for years. Each one has its own personality, atmosphere, and ideal type of traveler.
Choosing the right cruise starts with understanding you—your travel style, your priorities, and what makes a vacation feel like your vacation. Let me help you find your perfect match.
There’s a moment in every traveler’s journey—that quiet realization that you don’t want a vacation that looks like everyone else’s. You want an experience that reflects who you are, not who you think you’re supposed to be on vacation.
Here’s what I’ve learned about cruising: the cruise line you choose shapes your entire experience. It’s not just about finding the biggest ship or the best deal—though those matter. It’s about the culture onboard, the destinations they visit, the dining philosophy, the entertainment style, and the overall vibe of the passengers around you. A family with young kids will have a completely different experience on the same ship as a couple celebrating their 30th anniversary—and that’s by design.
The good news? There truly is a cruise line for everyone. The challenge is knowing which questions to ask yourself to narrow down the options.
Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or you’ve sailed a dozen times, this guide will help you cut through the noise and find your match. Because when you choose the right cruise line—one that genuinely reflects who you are—everything else falls into place.
Your Cruise Personality: The Right Questions to Ask Yourself
Before we dive into the cruise lines I’m most passionate about, let’s talk about you. Grab a cup of coffee and reflect on these questions honestly:
Who’s traveling with you? Are you going solo, with a partner, with kids, with extended family, or with friends? Group dynamics matter.
What’s your budget sweet spot? Cruising offers great value, but ranges from budget-friendly to luxury. Being honest here helps tremendously.
What does relaxation mean to you? Do you want constant entertainment and activities? Or a quiet getaway with plenty of downtime? Or something in between?
How adventurous are you? Do you enjoy exploring ports independently, or do you prefer organized excursions? Fast-paced itineraries or leisurely sea days?
What’s your dining style? Are you a foodie seeking innovative cuisine, or do you prefer classic dining options?
Do you prefer big or small ships? Newer mega-ships offer endless activities, while smaller or older vessels offer charm and ease of navigation.
What’s your travel pace? Do you want lots of ports, or fewer stops with more time to explore?
Your answers to these questions are your North Star.
